Extension Aftercare:

  • I recommend using extension safe hair care 1-2x/week to cleanse & condition your hair. Shampooing more often will reduce the life of your extensions.

It is important to completely detangle the hair before you get in the shower. Hair expands & at its weakest when wet which makes even small tangles difficult to deal with!

In the shower, use the gentle technique discussed during your initial installation and make sure to get in between all of your rows.

Only use conditioner at the mids and ends of your hair to avoid buildup.

You also have the option of the “half wash” if you need to shampoo your own hair more often than 1-2x/week. You can find the link for my tutorial here.

  • Gently squeeze the water out of your hair, do not rub! Make sure before drying you protect your hair with a heat protectant.

Follow with brushing through with an extension brush at the ends only. Start to hit hair with the blow dryer. When the hair is 50% dry (doesn’t drop any water or appear super damp) apply styling products. Finish blow drying.

At 80% dry you can start using a brush to assist with the styling process.

YOUR HAIR MUST BE COMPLETELY DRY BEFORE GOING TO BED.

  • Shampoo, conditioner and other hair products need to be extension friendly – meaning they should be more than paraben and sulfate-free. Any products supplied at Alter’d Mane have been deemed safe!

You should also use a serum/oil from ears down, daily, for moisture! I recommend Goldie Locks Signature Serum and Oi Oil. If you have products at home that you would like to use, or are interested in trying something new, please check with me to make sure it is safe for extensions.

  • Curling iron: I use and prefer the 1 inch

This is my at home dryer:

This is also a great dryer! More expensive, but longer warranty:

    This straightener aka smoothing iron:

  • I recommend using a silk bonnet, a silk heatless curler set, braid your hair, or put in a low bun for sleep. It’s also best to sleep on a silk pillowcase (this is great for your face AND hair). Cotton pillowcases can cause frizz, breakage, & split ends over time. Silk pillowcases are far more gentle on your hair & skin. I highly recommend the KITSCH pillowcases! Do not sleep on your extensions while they’re wet, it will damage your natural hair, can cause matting, mold, & will reduce the longevity of your investment.

  • As far as tools go, you can straighten & curl your hair like normal! Most hair types should not heat style above 390 degrees farenheit. When using hot tools, don’t forget to apply a heat protectant before each round of heating tools. Obviously, the fewer hot tools you use, the better, as it drys out your hair. I’ve actually had to style my hair WAY less with extensions because it holds the style SO well. My natural hair won't hold curl whatsoever. With extensions, I curl my hair after I wash & dry it, then I just touch up the curls as the week goes on until I wash my hair again. This honestly saves me so much time!

  • The big question – Can you swim with extensions?

Yes – BUT there are minerals found in some water that can react poorly with your extensions & can cause discoloration or dry them out.

When it comes to the ocean, things do change a bit. The salt water can be extremely drying & cause severe matting. This applies to all hair, not just extension hair.

I recommend removing your extensions or avoiding salt water as much as possible with extensions.

To avoid this, I advise to do the following:

    * Wet your hair before getting into the pool/lake, etc. After wetting, generously apply a leave in conditioner or hair mask.

    * Comb your conditioner or mask through your hair, put it in a tight pony then braid.

    * Brush & wash your hair immediately after swimming.

    * Beware of sunscreen, most brands contain ingredients that will turn your extensions a brassy orange or peach color. I recommend the BARE REPUBLIC brand, it is sold at Ulta or Target. Stay away from any sunscreen that includes "Avobenzone" as an ingredient.

Color Service Aftercare:

  • After a color appointment, wait 72 hours for the cuticle of your hair to fully rest before shampooing, which will make your color last a bit longer.

If you go longer than 48 hours between washes, it’s best to shampoo twice! That’s right - lather rinse & repeat!

On a regular basis, shampoo 1-2x per week. If you feel like you need to shampoo more often, try washing with cooler water to avoid opening your sebaceous glands in the shower, & using products that contain less alcohol. Also, your diet plays a huge role in how often you will need to shampoo your hair.

  • You must use color safe products after a color service at Alter’d Mane. We use safer, more natural products which means it takes a little more work to protect your color.

I have sampled tons of products to ensure I am bringing you the best! Everything within the walls of Alter’d Mane is safe for all hair types & needs!

  • Not sure when to come back in for your next visit? Here is a general maintenance schedule for my most popular services:

REFRESH’D- This is a refreshing for gray coverage or a roots to ends glaze. You should see me for this service every 4-8 weeks.

REVIV’D: This is a service to choose if you need to make subtle change or reviving to your balayage/money piece. This service needs to be performed every 8-12 weeks.

TAILOR’D: This service is for everything fancy word - baby light, balayage, tease-lights. It can be done every 8+ weeks or whenever you need a full highlighting service.

    • Come to your appointment with clean, dry hair. This ensures the product penetrates the cuticle appropriately.

    • Protect your hair regualrly with a masque. I often tell guests to use a hair masque 1x/monthly.

    • Apply dry shampoo on day one! This will make sure the powder will soak up oils as they are produced, & results in less product build up.
